A Spring Lake man was killed and his wife injured in a car accident Monday on I-96 near Lowell.

The man and his wife were on their way back from Detroit when their vehicle rolled over.

Michigan State Police, who would not release the names of the victims, the driver lost control of his vehicle shortly after 6:45pm. The car went into the median and overturned twice.

Both vehicle occupants had their seatbelts on at the time of the crash. The driver was pronounced dead on the scene and the passenger was transported to the hospital in Grand Rapids.

Marilyn told family members that she remembers the incident, Paul said. The pair had stopped near Lowell to get some coffee, and then got lost and had to ask for directions.

The VanVelzens were joking about asking for directions as they were coming up onto the freeway, Paul said. The next thing Marilyn said she remembers was the vehicle being all over the road.
