Under Michigan law, the owner of every car must have car insurance. Due to problems with the economy in this state, many drivers are dropping their collision and theft coverage to reduce their car insurance premiums. One common misperception is that auto insurance rates are high because of the number of injury claims related to car accidents. This is not true and the coverage for injury claims is really the smallest portion of the premium. The majority of the cost is for collision coverage.
