An interesting article appeared today in the Concord Monitor, a newspaper in Maine, regarding the prevention of child lead poisoning. The article points out that most laws and regulations today deal with scenarios after a child has been diagnosed with high lead levels in the blood. These would include lead paint inspections of the property where the child resides, home education, and other interventions after the child has been diagnosed. Unfortunately, by the time it reaches this point, it is too late to prevent the life long damage that has been done to the child. The best thing would be to systemize and find a method of intervention before the child ever became lead poisoned. This way, we would not be dealing with the lifelong consequences of the disease. The article discusses several strategies to accomplish this goal.
