A retired Air Force Major has changed his focus from providing protective headgear to troops overseas to ensuring the proper care for troops that return home to Michigan with a head injury.

The man, director of the Michigan Chapter of Operation Helmet, has recently taken over command at Head Injured Survivors of America.

The nonprofit organization will provide financial aid to Michigan war veterans that suffer from a traumatic brain injury. It will work hand in hand with Brighton-based Brain Injury Association of Michigan.

The organization's purpose is to raise funds for research into head injuries and to help veterans that suffer head injuries. Also, it will provide educational materials to mental health professionals and families.
