Medical malpractice, also known as medical negligence, is a seriously under-reported problem. More people die each year as a result of medical malpractice than in car accidents. In fact, the American Institute of Medicine reports that over 95,000 people die each year from medical malpractice. Thousands more are made sick, disfigured, or suffer decrease in their quality of life as a result of negligence in the medical profession. Despite this, some studies suggest as many as 7 out of 8 hospital injuries go unreported and only one out of 50 medical error is reported.

Since so few possible medical malpractice claims are reported, you may be wondering about all those so-called “frivolous lawsuits” that supposedly drive up the cost of healthcare. The truth is that medical malpractice claims have actually decreased over the past several years. And, rates for malpractice insurance have risen by less than half the increase in healthcare costs since 1987.

All this means that anyone injured as a result of medical malpractice should not blame themselves for their injuries. Instead, the best thing to do is to discuss your possible medical malpractice case with a qualified, competent Michigan medical malpractice attorney. That way, the injured person, and not the insurance company, can decide if he or she wants to pursue a claim to hold medical professionals and their insurance companies liable for their carelessness.
