There has been a lot of controversy over the past few years on whether certain vaccines, like Thimerosal, causes autism in children. The number of children diagnosed with autism in recent years has grown significantly and the medical community has attempted to determine if the vaccines are a cause or contributing factor to autism. Many lawsuits have been filed against vaccine makers alleging this connection.

An article appearing in the recent New England Journal of Medicine discusses this controversy. While the article does not offer any conclusions on whether the vaccine causes autism, it does cite studies that find no link between the vaccine and the childhood disease. The article concludes that the controversy itself has had a detrimental effect on the health and welfare of children as many children have gone without the vaccine and the fact that the vaccine may ultimately be pulled from the market.

editor's note- Thimerosal itself is not a vaccine, but a preservative used in the production of MMR vaccines.
