Detroit Dog Attack Injures Child

A 13 year old boy suffered serious injuries last week in a Detroit, Michigan dog bite attack. He was attacked and bitten by a neighbor's dog crashed through a fence and attacked the child. He suffered significant injuries from the dog bites to his leg, which required surgery at Children's Hospital of Michigan. The neighbor and owner of the dog apparently knew of the broken gate before the incident.

Under Michigan law, the owner of the dog is strictly liable for the injuries and damages to the child. This means that essentially, he is automatically negligent for the attack and can be forced to pay money damages to the child. My firm handles a significant number of dog bite cases and the insurance company for the dog owner typically pays an out of court settlement to the child.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Larry Buckfire

Michigan Dog Bite Attacks Kill Two People(2)

Two Michiganders, a 91 year old man and a 56 year old woman, were mauled to death by a pack of bulldogs the other day in a Michigan dog attack case. Ten bulldogs were seized by Livingston County Animal Control officers after the deadly attacks in rural Iosoco Township. Funerals are being arranged for both victims.

Under Michigan law, the owners of the dogs are strictly liable for the deaths of the two people. The surviving family members can file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking money damages from the dogs' owners. My firm handles a significant number of dog attack cases throughout Michigan, but this is the first death case that I have heard of result directly from a dog attack.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Larry Buckfire

Dog Bite Verdict of $3.7 Million in Florida

A significant verdict was handed down recently in a dog bite case in Delray Beach, Florida. The 38 year old victim worked as a housekeeper and is now unable to work because of the brutal dog attack. The verdict totaled approximately $3,700,000.00.

My firm handles a significant number of dog bite and dog attack cases here in Michigan. The injuries are often quite severe and range from scarring and disfigurement to severe nerve damage. Many victims sustain other serious injuries while trying to avoid the attack or protect themselves from the dogs. In Michigan, dog bite cases are often strict liability, especially when the dog is not properly leashed. This essentially means that the owner or keeper of the dog is automatically liable for injuries caused by the canine and the main question in the case is the amount of money that is appropriate to compensate the victim.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Larry Buckfire

Postal Carrier Injured in Dog Attacks

The U.S. Postal Service has stopped delivering mail in a certain Northwest Detroit neighborhood because a postal carrier was viciously attacked twice by different dogs. Dog attacks and dog bite cases are not new to mail carriers and postal workers who walk through neighborhoods daily and have to fend off stray dogs. Owners of dogs who run stray and injure others are negligent under both state and local laws and can be sued by the injured persons. They also are subject to fines from the city. Our office handles a great number of dog attack and dog bite cases and we are currently investigating a case for a postal worker severely injured from a dog attack.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Larry Buckfire

Forget Dog Bites, Coyotes on The Prowl

Numerous studies have shown litters of city pups survive in greater numbers than country cousins who work harder for traditional food like grasshoppers, mice and rabbits. In suburbs, coyotes eat garbage, pet food and even scraps from Metro Detroit residents who feed the wild animals, Payne said.

A unusual trend is happening here in Michigan. While Michiganders used to be on the looking for wandering dogs, this is nothing compared to packs of wild coyotes that are roaming the streets. The coyotes, which are about the size of collies, have moved into the cities based upon the availability of food and shelter. While there have been no attacks yet on people, small pets are being attached and severely injured. The Detroit News reported on these animal attacks in today's paper.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Larry Buckfire

It's Michigan Dog Bite Season

A story in the Oakland Press the other day discussed the fact that the number of dog bites and animal attacks increases every Spring in Michigan. With the weather warming and more dogs outside and roaming the streets, the likelihood of attacks increases. Many dogs also escape their fenced yards and wander. Last year alone, there were over 400 dog bits reported to the Oakland County Animal Control office. My office handles a significant number of dog bite and animal attack cases and has obtained significant settlements for clients on these cases.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Larry Buckfire

Rat Poison Found in Tainted Pet Food

The recent number of pet deaths is due to tainted pet food. Reports from the Department of Agriculture confirm that a rat poison was detected in the dog and cat food. Over sixteen pet deaths have been confirmed due to this tainted food. A class action lawsuit has been filed in Seattle and pet food companies have discussed the possibility of paying vet bills for the sick pets.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Larry Buckfire

Tragic Car Accident Kills Teenagers

We received a call about a crash on the south I-94 service drive, between Belleville and Quirk roads, at about 1:20 a.m. Saturday," said Sgt. Fred Yono of the traffic services bureau of the Van Buren Police Department.

"Our investigation shows that a vehicle carrying four persons was traveling westbound and attempting to make a turn into an apartment complex when it was struck by a car traveling eastbound. Both brothers were sitting in the back of the westbound vehicle.

Two teenage brothers in Sumpter Township died tragically when their vehicle was struck turning into an apartment complex near I-94. Their vehicle was struck by another vehicle traveling on the same road. Both boys were backseat passengers and were not wearing their seat belts at the time of the accident. This tragic case is similar to a wrongful death claim handled by my office several years ago on behalf of the family who suffered a similar tragic loss when several family members were killed and others suffered serious injuries as a result of a negligent driver.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Larry Buckfire

Jury Awards Man $122,400.00 For Cat Bite

My firm regularly represents clients in dog bite and attack cases. Clients often suffer significant scarring and disfigurement, nerve damage, and psychological injuries from these attacks. An unusual case recently went to trial in Genessee County, Michigan involving a man who was bitten by his sister's Siamese cat. The man suffered serious injuries, including an infection that required hospitalization and he incurred over $20,000.00 in medical bills.

The jury in Flint, Michigan rendered a verdict for the injured man in the amount of $122,400.00 for his injuries arising from the cat attack. The man made a claim against his sister's homeowner's insurance company to pay his medical bills but the insurance company simply ignored the claim. The man was forced to hire a lawyer to file a lawsuit and the jury awarded him six times more than his medical bills.

Originally posted at InjuryBoard by Larry Buckfire
